Issue Block of 16 of Ben Franklin
The year 1847 is a huge one for stamps: this was the first year that you could purchase stamps from the United States government and affix them to a piece of mail as a method to prepay for its delivery (the legislation was passed in 1845). These are examples of the very first U.S. Federal stamps. Naturally, a great deal of correspondence was exchanged before 1847—the United States Post Office Department was established in 1792—but those letters were mostly paid for by the receiver.
Benjamin Franklin, who along with George Washington graced the first stamps, has a fascinating history with the post, filled with intrigue. In 1775, upon his return from England, Franklin was named postmaster general of the independent colonies by the Continental Congress.

Also known as Upside Down Jenny, The Inverted Jenny is a United States postage stamp with a face value of 24 cents. It was first issued on 10 May 1918. Also, it is a printing error that makes this one of the rarest postage stamps in the world. It features the image of the Curtiss JN-4 airplane upside-down.
It is believed that only 100 stamps with the error exist now. Even though at least three more sheets had been printed with the error, they all were found and destroyed. A single Inverted Jenny stamp was sold for $977,500 at an auction in 2007.

Do you know how the postage stamp came into existence? The revolutionary change came in 1840 when an Englishman came up with the idea of a stamp to simplify the postal system. This is how the first stamp came forth which was known as the Penny Black Stamp. The Penny Black stamp, hence, became the mother of the Modern Postal system and a new hobby of collecting stamps.
Stamp collecting may seem a bit old-fashioned but rare stamps, however, are selling for hundreds and thousands of pounds.

The stamps were in three denominations; 2 cents, 5 cents and 13 cents. They went on to be known as ‘Missionaries’ because most of them were discovered on the correspondence between Missionaries working in Hawaii. All of the stamps were made on blue paper of cheap quality. The design consisted of the numeral of denomination in the center and the denomination in words at the bottom. The phrase ‘Hawaiian / Postage’ were inscribed on 2 and 5-cent stamps while ‘H.I. & U.S / Postage’ was printed on the 13-cent stamps. The 2-cent version is the rarest among the three, with only 15 of them existing.

Expert collectors understand that perforations missing, faded colors, paper flacks, and other imperfections greatly diminish stamp value. Stamps are generally graded on a scale such as Superb Fine Good. Anything below “good” isn’t worth acquiring for senior collectors; as with most collectibles, stamps’ values decrease depending on the number of tears, creases, faded designs, and other aesthetic issues that are present.
Stamp gum is the glue found on the backside of the stamp.
The highest valued stamps have perfect gum that is still original, undamaged, and in the same state as when it left the post office.

Between 1845, when Congress established federally standardized rates for postage and 1847, when the first federal postage stamps were produced, postmasters in counties and cities within the 29 states issued their own provisional stamps. Postmasters got creative with the designs. For example, the St. Louis provisional stamps display the image of two bears holding the United States coat of arms between them.
Of particular interest are such provisional stamps from Alexandria, which was retroceded to the state of Virginia (from the District of Columbia) in these years. Seven such stamps are known to exist, but most of them are “buff” or a brownish-yellow color.
